The author presents accounts of Spanish America (Arizona
and New Mexico) prior to Statehood as Arizona and New Mexico. The book
commences with a piece of nostalgic prose entitled “Arizona” in remembrance
of the author’s journeys to Arizona a few decades ago, a different land even
then than is encountered in the modern age of ATV’s and other desert
visitors. “
Included are accounts of the early
Spanish explorers into the region. (Gasper Perez de Villagra and Father Kino
‘The first Cowboy’). An overview of
the Pueblo revolt and of the Pueblo people gives much insight into the life
of indigenous people, the Moquis and the White Mountain Apaches. One of the
earliest accounts of early exploration of both the Columbia River and the Grand
Canyon. Early Exploration of
the Colorado River, The Rio Verde excavations, John Strong Newberry, The
explorations by Colonel Joseph Clives –“The River of the West” Exploration of the Colorado River by John
Wesley Powell
For those who enjoy a little
mystery accounts are included of a spurious 1909 tale of Ancient Egyptian
artifacts, ‘discovered’ in Marble
Cave at Grand Canyon. Also included the mystery of ancient Hebrew script
discovered at Los Lunas, New Mexico
